4-Bromophenol is a toxic chemical with a number of uses. It is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of some pharmaceuticals and pesticides, as well as an industrial chemical in the production of textiles, plastics, and dyes. 4-Bromophenol can be found in wastewater treatment plants, where it is used to remove organic pollutants from water. The reactive nature of 4-bromophenol means that it binds to other molecules easily, forming new compounds. 4-Bromophenol reacts with p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA) to form 4-bromoaniline and p-hydroxybenzoic acid on a basic surface like glass or metal oxide. This reaction mechanism can be inhibited by binding inhibitors such as EDTA or DTT.
