4,4'-Bis(chloromethyl)biphenyl is a chemical compound that contains a hydroxyl group and a chlorine atom. It can be synthesized by the Friedel-Crafts reaction of an aromatic hydrocarbon with phosphotungstic acid and anhydrous sodium. The reaction mixture is then treated with sodium carbonate, hydrochloric acid, and a fatty acid. This produces 4,4'-bis(chloromethyl)biphenyl along with hydrogen chloride as a by-product. The product can be purified by recrystallization from water or by washing with sodium hydroxide solution followed by extraction into chloroform. 4,4'-Bis(chloromethyl)biphenyl is stable in the solid form but reacts quickly in solution to form hydroxide complexes with strong bases such as diazonium salts. These complexes are colorless and are soluble in organic solvents such as benzene
