Bis(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethylphenyl) sulfone is an arylate that undergoes ring-opening polymerization to form a polyester. Bis(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethylphenyl) sulfone can be synthesized by cyclodehydration of the corresponding diols in the presence of catalytic amounts of sulfuric acid and heat. The monomer is then converted to the polyester by catalytic reduction of the corresponding chlorides with sodium metal in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature. Bis(4-hydoxy-3,5-dimethylphenyl) sulfone has a transition temperature of about -65 degrees Celsius.
