3-Bromo-4-fluorobenzotrifluoride is a reactive arylating agent that is used to synthesize amines. 3-Bromo-4-fluorobenzotrifluoride reacts with amines to form an N-C bond and can be used for the synthesis of nitro-, hydroxy-, or carboxyamides. This reagent has been shown to have an efficiency of 60%, although the rate of reaction is dependent on the steric nature of the bromide substituents. The reactivity of this agent depends on the type of halogen substituents, as well as their positions on the aromatic ring. For example, bromine substituents are more reactive than fluorine or chlorine substituents. The reactivity can also be increased by adding electron withdrawing groups such as nitro, cyano, or carboxyl groups.
