2-bromo-5-iodoanisole (BIA) is an aryl halide that undergoes electrophilic substitution reactions. It has been used as a chlorinating agent to produce monochlorobenzene, dichlorobenzene, and trichlorobenzene. 2-bromo-5-iodoanisole can also be used to synthesize butyllithiums and mesylates. These compounds are bifunctional, meaning they can act as both an electrophile and a nucleophile in substitution reactions.
