It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to the imine group in the bacterial cell wall and preventing its synthesis. 6-Bromo-2,3-dimethoxybenzoic acid has also been shown to be synthesised from 2,3-dimethoxybenzoic acid and bromine. This compound is a benzophenanthridine alkaloid that inhibits protein synthesis and cell division.
