Butyl methacrylate is a monomer that is used in the synthesis of polymers. It is a biocompatible polymer with a high degree of compatibility with living tissues and low toxicity. Butyl methacrylate has been shown to be an optimum concentration for hydrogen bonding. This monomer has been used as a coating material for biological tissue implants, such as atherosclerotic lesions, due to its ability to resist water vapor and hydrolysis by enzymes. It does not contain any hydroxyl groups and can be polymerized electrochemically using palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions. However, it does have a particle size that is too large for some applications.
