Tert-butyl methyl malonate is a chiral, tertiary alcohol that can be used in the synthesis of vitamin B12. It is synthesized from magnesium and malonate in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid and chemo-catalysis. Tert-butyl methyl malonate has been shown to bind to the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) and act as an antagonist. This agent also has anti-inflammatory properties that may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
