Bombesin is a peptide hormone that belongs to the gastrin family of peptides. It is found in humans, other mammals, and many species of fish. Bombesin causes physiological effects by binding to bombesin receptors on cells. This receptor is coupled with G-protein that activates adenylyl cyclase, which increases intracellular levels of cAMP and Ca2+. Bombesin has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of carcinoma cell lines in vitro and can be used for the treatment of prostate cancer.
Bombesin's molecular weight is 8,812 Daltons and it has a basic protein at its N-terminus. The sequence contains 6 cysteine residues that form three disulfide bonds. It has an internalization assay in human cells and can be detected by Western blotting using an anti-bombesin antibody.
