4-Bromophenyl trifluoromethanesulfonate is a chemical compound that is used as a catalyst in organic synthesis. It is also an intermediate for the synthesis of other compounds, such as 4-bromobenzenesulfonyl chloride. The catalyst system is typically composed of copper metal and either zinc or cadmium metal. The transfer of the bromine atom from the starting material to the copper or zinc metal occurs with formation of the corresponding copper(II) or zinc(II) bromide salt. This reaction can be catalyzed by light, heat, or acidity. The carbonylative transformation of alcohols to aliphatic carboxylic acids can be achieved via this process.
