It is an ionic liquid, which are liquids with ionic properties but nonpolar solvents. 1-Butyl-3-Methyl-1H-Imidazol-3-Ium Trifluoroacetate can be used in analytical chemistry because it is thermally stable and shows little change in volume during the temperature range of -90 to 150 degrees Celsius. This compound has been shown to form crystalline polymorphs, or different crystal structures, depending on the solvent type. 1BMI has also shown transport properties, such as viscosity, through which it can be used as a heat transfer medium and an acid formation reaction mechanism.
