Flurbiprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is used for the treatment of pain, inflammation, and fever. It is also used to prevent swelling and to reduce tenderness in people with osteoarthritis. Flurbiprofen inhibits cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) activity and thereby reduces the production of prostaglandins. This inhibition can be reversed by acetylcholine or other ester hydrochloride analogs such as pge2 levels. The binding site of flurbiprofen on COX-2 has been identified as an inhibitor binding site. Flurbiprofen has also been shown to inhibit the proliferation of K562 cells, a type of white blood cell, in vitro and to decrease the severity of balloon injury in rats. This drug may also have anti-inflammatory activities due to its ability to inhibit fatty acid synthesis in fat cells.
