Xanthorrhizol is a natural compound extracted from Curcuma longa L. (turmeric) that has been shown to have anti-cancer and anti-infectious properties. Xanthorrhizol has been shown to inhibit the growth of oral pathogens, such as candida, by interfering with their cell membranes. It also inhibits the growth of cancer cells and hl-60 cells in vitro. Xanthorrhizol has a synergic effect when used with curcumin against candida and was shown to be active against strains of c. glabrata resistant to fluconazole and itraconazole. Xanthorrhizol also shows some antibacterial efficacy against gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
