6-Cyano-2-naphthol is a hydroxylated aromatic compound that has a molecular weight of 164.077 g/mol. It has two hydroxyl groups and a cavity. 6-Cyano-2-naphthol is used in the synthesis of ester hydrochlorides and fluorophores, which have been studied using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and fluorescence measurements. The binding constants for the esters are in the range of 10 to 10 M, while the binding constants for the fluorophores are in the range of 10 to 10 M. 6-Cyano-2-naphthol has been demonstrated to be a mitochondrial membrane potential probe with an emission maximum at 515 nm and a fluorescence lifetime of 3 ms. This molecule also can be protonated by hydrogen chloride, which leads to its accumulation within mitochondria due to its low pK value (3).
