4-Chloro-3-nitroanisole is a reactive compound that is used in the industrial process of synthesizing dyes and pigments. It has been shown to react with a variety of compounds, including amides, which gives rise to a new molecule. This reaction proceeds through protonation and involves hydrochloric acid and chloride ions. The product is then neutralized by water vapor or phosphoric acid solution. 4-Chloro-3-nitroanisole can be prepared by the Friedel-Crafts reaction between benzene and nitric acid, which leads to the formation of an amide group on one end of the molecule. This compound is also known as 2,4,6-trichloroaniline or TCA.
