Chloromethyl methyl sulphide is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the protease activity of HIV. It also has been shown to inhibit the replication of other viruses, such as picornaviruses, which cause polio, hepatitis A and B, and rhinovirus. Chloromethyl methyl sulfide binds to the viral protein with a hydroxyl group and inhibits its proteolytic activity in a reaction mechanism that is similar to that of papain. This molecule may be used for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, metabolic disorders, or muscle cell proliferation.
