4-Cyanophenyl isocyanate (4CPI) is a synthetic compound that has potent cytotoxicity. It can be synthesized by the reaction of 4-cyanophenol and hydrogen sulfate in the presence of nitrous acid, although it also arises from the oxidation of phenolic compounds. 4CPI reacts with a nucleophilic hydroxyl group to form an intramolecular hydrogen bond between its two carbonyl groups and produces a reactive intermediate that is responsible for its cytotoxic effects. The fluorescence properties of 4CPI have been studied using kinase receptor tyrosine kinase domain mutants and molecular modelling techniques.
