7-Chloro-6-fluoro-1-(methylamino)-4-oxo-1,4-dihydro-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid (7CFA) is an antibacterial agent that belongs to the group of carboxylic acids. It has a bactericidal effect against gram positive and gram negative bacteria. 7CFA inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the ribosomes and inhibiting protein synthesis. 7CFA is also effective against C. difficile, which is often resistant to other antibiotics. The drug is metabolized into 7CFA chloride, which has a stronger antibacterial activity than the parent drug. This active form can be hydrolyzed by esterases or glucuronidases, oxidized by cytochrome P450 enzymes, or reduced by glutathione reductase.
