Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is an organic compound with the chemical formula CF3CO2H. This colorless liquid has a strong, unpleasant smell and is toxic to mammals. It is used as a solvent in analytical chemistry and as an intermediate in organic synthesis. TFA inhibits the hydroxylation of amines by inhibiting the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase. TFA also has inhibitory properties against a number of other enzymes, including acetylcholinesterase and cytochrome P450s.
