Cobaltous nitrate hexahydrate is an oxide of cobalt and a co-catalyst for the oxidation of glycol ethers. It is used to remove water from wastewater. Cobaltous nitrate hexahydrate reacts with sodium citrate in the presence of water vapor to form sodium citrate monohydrate and cobaltous nitrate. This reaction solution is then heated, which results in the decomposition of p-hydroxybenzoic acid and hydrogen bonding interactions between the oxygen atoms in water molecules and the cobalt atom in the cobaltous nitrate. The structural analysis of this product reveals that it has an octahedral coordination geometry around a central metal ion, which is most likely cobalt.
