2-Chloro-5-(cyanomethyl)pyridine is a methyl ester that is synthesized by alkylation of pyridine with chloroacetic acid. It is used as a bioassay for the detection of active methylene compounds in biological systems.
The bioassay involves the use of an enzyme, carbon disulphide and an acid hydrazide to produce 2-chloro-5-(cyanomethyl)pyridine from the substrate methylene blue. The 2-chloro-5-(cyanomethyl)pyridine reacts with the chloride ions present in the solution to form a colorless product, 2-chloro-5-(cyanomethyl)pyridinium chloride. This reaction can be catalyzed by adding acid hydrazide or chlorides such as hydrochloric acid or sodium chloride.
