It has insecticidal properties that are based on its ability to inhibit the synthesis of chitin in insects. This compound has been shown to be 10 times more effective than phenyl isothiocyanate and 100 times more effective than 2,4,5,-trichlorophenyl isothiocyanate. 2-Chloro-N-[3-(cyano)-6-(1,1-dimethylpropyl)]acetamide also protects plants from disease.
