[(4-Chlorophenyl)thio]acetic acid is a compound that exhibits cytostatic and cytotoxic effects. It is an analog of the natural substrate for topoisomerase, which it binds to with high affinity. [(4-Chlorophenyl)thio]acetic acid inhibits the activity of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. [(4-Chlorophenyl)thio]acetic acid has been shown to be effective against PC-3 cells in vitro and has strong antitumor activity in animals. The anticancer mechanism of this drug is not well understood, but may be due to its ability to induce apoptosis.
