1-(2-Chloroethyl)pyrrolidin-2-one is a chemical compound that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other drugs. It can be obtained by condensation of ethylene with chloroethane, which leads to ethylene oxide and chloride. The addition of ethylene oxide leads to the formation of 1-(2-chloroethyl)pyrrolidin-2-one. This process occurs through a series of reactions that are commonly called alkylation reactions. These reactions involve the replacement of one part or more hydrogens on a molecule with another molecule, such as ethylene. Ethylene is reacted with chlorine gas to produce chloroethane, which reacts with ethylene oxide to form 1-(2-chloroethyl)pyrrolidin-2-one.
