N-Cyanobenzamide is a chemical compound that has been shown to have antitumor activity in vitro. N-Cyanobenzamide reacts with active methylene groups to form tetronic acid, which is a reaction product. Tetronic acid then reacts with amines to form an active methylene group. The active methylene group can react with hydroxides of metals and x-ray diffraction data to form metal hydroxides. These reactions have been shown to be reversible and are catalyzed by acid or alkaline conditions. Synthetic methods for the preparation of N-cyanobenzamide are available and can be used in the production of other compounds through amide synthesis.
