2-Cyano-N-ethylacetamide is a colorless liquid that has a chemical formula of C4H7NO2. It is an organic compound and a functional molecule. 2-Cyano-N-ethylacetamide has the tautomeric form RNHCOCH3, which can be converted to the active methylene RNH(CO)CH3. The vibrational spectra of the molecule show that it contains one stretching vibration at 1694 cm−1, two bending vibrations at 1283 cm−1 and 1350 cm−1, and one deformation vibration at 706 cm−1. The molecule has been shown to have antibacterial properties against Gram-positive bacteria (e.g., Bacillus subtilis), but not against Gram-negative bacteria (e.g., Escherichia coli).
