5-Chlorobenzothiophene is a pharmaceutical that inhibits the growth of dermatophytes by affecting their cell wall. It has been shown to have cross-coupling activity in the synthesis of butyllithium and imidazole, which are used as pharmaceuticals. This drug also has anti-fungal properties and can be used for the treatment of dermatophyte infections. 5-Chlorobenzothiophene can be synthesized by a transition metal catalytic reaction with carbon disulfide, halides, and skeletons. The drug is available in both free base form and as its sodium salt.
