Trans-cyclobutane-1,2-dicarboxylic acid is a marine natural product that belongs to the class of compounds known as cyclobutenes. It is an enantiopure molecule with a crystallographic data set. Trans-cyclobutane-1,2-dicarboxylic acid has been shown to have bioactive properties and can be used as a template molecule for the synthesis of other biologically active molecules. The biosynthesis of this compound has been studied in detail and it has been found that trans-cyclobutane-1,2-dicarboxylic acid is produced by mequinol and eugenol via multistep reactions involving dysidea, which are the enzyme catalysts.
