Cowaxanthone B is a hexane-synthesized, non-steroidal compound that has been shown to have cytotoxicity. It inhibits the transfer of phospholipids from the inner mitochondrial membrane to the outer surface of the membrane, which prevents cell dysfunction and residue accumulation. Cowaxanthone B also inhibits metabolic disorders and antibacterial activity. It has been shown to inhibit cancer progression and neurodegenerative diseases by inhibiting a pathway that causes cell dysfunction in the brain. The mechanism for this inhibition is not known, but it has been hypothesized that cowaxanthone B may interrupt transfer from the inner mitochondrial membrane to the outer surface of the membrane.
