Cyclopentane-1,1-diyldimethanol is an organic solvent that is used in a variety of industrial applications. Cyclopentane-1,1-diyldimethanol can be used as the monomer for polymers that have functional groups such as carboxylic acid or aromatic hydrocarbon. The methyl glycosides in this solvent are responsible for its optical properties. This solvent is also used to synthesize polycarboxylic acid, which is a type of polymer with many alicyclic and lipase molecules. Cyclopentane-1,1-diyldimethanol is also used as the matrix material in radiation detectors and nuclear reactors.
