The mechanism of action involves nucleophilic attack by the hydroxyl group on the phosphate ester bond of viral RNA. Cholesteryl methylether may also function as a vitamin D3 precursor for animals because it is an animal-specific compound and has been observed to cause liver cells to synthesize vitamin D3.
