4-Chloro-2-methoxyphenylboronic acid is an inhibitor of the protease kallikrein. It inhibits the enzyme by binding to the active site and blocking or competing with substrate. The inhibitory activity of 4-chloro-2-methoxyphenylboronic acid has been shown in mice, which have shown reduced levels of kallikrein in their corneum. The crystal structure of this inhibitor is being used to design new drugs that will be more potent and selective for human kallikrein. The chemical structure of 4-chloro-2-methoxyphenylboronic acid is complexed with a peptide substrate, which may explain its potency as an inhibitor.
