It binds to DNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. 4-Chloromethylbiphenyl has been shown to increase the potency of other carcinogens in assays with liver cells. 4-Chloromethylbiphenyl is found in small quantities in the environment and has been detected in human urine samples. This compound may be found in food as a contaminant from processing or packaging materials, but it is not known if this compound is absorbed into the body when ingested.
