1-[(4-Chlorophenyl)phenylmethyl]piperazine HCl (1:1) is an antihistamine. It inhibits the release of histamine from mast cells, which are cells found in connective tissue and produce the chemical mediator histamine. 1-[(4-Chlorophenyl)phenylmethyl]piperazine HCl (1:1) has been shown to inhibit the production of amines in cell culture and human liver, as well as phospholipidosis in animals. This drug also has a potential for protein synthesis inhibition, which may be due to its ability to induce enzyme inducers such as carbamazepine, or n-oxide.
