- 1-[2-Chloro-4-(4-chlorophenyl)butyl]-1H-imidazole
1-(2-Chloro-4-(4-chlorophenyl)butyl)-1H-imidazole (1-CHLBI) is a synthetic compound that has been shown to inhibit the replication of retroviruses. It binds to the hydroxyl group on the nitrogen atom of furyl, which is part of a nucleotide in the viral dna, and prevents its incorporation into the growing chain. This inhibits rna synthesis and protein synthesis, leading to cell death and inhibition of virus production. 1-CHLBI also has antiviral activity against HIV infection. The trifluoromethyl group at position 1 prevents the metabolism by cytochrome P450 enzymes, while the nitro group at position 2 acts as an electron donor in an oxidation reaction with glutathione reductase or cytochrome P450 enzymes. 1-CHLBI also has an amide bond that can be hydrolyzed by esterases or glucuron
