2-(Chloromethyl)-1-methyl-4-nitrobenzene is a salicylaldehyde that is used in the synthesis of acetanilide and other compounds. It is also an antibacterial agent, which has been shown to have antitumor activity. 2-(Chloromethyl)-1-methyl-4-nitrobenzene inhibits bacterial growth by binding to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. This compound also reduces the inflammatory response by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. 2-(Chloromethyl)-1-methyl-4-nitrobenzene has been found to be an effective treatment for depression when combined with chlorpromazine or levomepromazine.
