3-chlorocyclobutane-1-carboxylic acid (3CCBA) is a byproduct of the industrial production of ethylene dichloride. 3CCBA is sensitive to the mechanisms that form it, and can be used as a tracer molecule for these reactions. It has been shown to be an intermediate in the oxidation of cyclohexane, which produces 3CCBA as a byproduct. 3CCBA has also been shown to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis, and may have potential for use in treating asthma or other respiratory conditions. The sensitivity of 3CCBA makes it possible to detect its presence in environmental samples. Analysis techniques include high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. The skeleton can be identified using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and kinetics analysis can be performed using perturbation theory or stereospecificity theory.
