Cianserine HCl is a coumarin derivative that binds to 5-HT2 receptors. It has been shown to have potent antiviral activity in vitro against viruses such as HIV, herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2, human cytomegalovirus, and influenza A virus. Cianserine HCl also has the ability to inhibit the production of fatty acids by inhibiting phospholipase C and thereby reducing inflammation. Cianserine HCl has been shown to be effective in vivo for the treatment of carcinoid syndrome through its ability to inhibit dopamine release from tumor cells.
