Cadmium telluride (CdTe) is a semiconductor material that has been used for infrared detection, solar cells, and thermoelectric coolers. It can be used as a thin-film photoelectric device to detect light in the near-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Cadmium telluride is sensitive to visible light and absorbs energy efficiently. The band gap of CdTe is 1.5 eV, making it a good absorber of infrared radiation. This property has been exploited to make cadmium telluride an effective absorber of CO2 from industrial emissions in coal power plants.
Cadmium telluride also has potential applications in fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). FRET occurs when two fluorescent molecules are close enough for their emitted photons to interact. Fluorescent molecules can be used as sensors for detecting certain types of biomolecules such as human serum albumin or influenza virus particles. Cadmium
