Cerium is a rare earth metal and can be found in the form of cerium sulfate. It reacts with glycol ether to produce a reaction solution that contains zirconium oxide and chemiluminescence. Cerium sulfate has been shown to have an acidic character, which may be due to its sulfate content. The atomic structure of cerium sulfate has been studied by X-ray diffraction, revealing intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the sulfate groups. This compound is used as a model system for other compounds containing intermolecular hydrogen bonding, such as copper chloride. Cerium sulfate has been shown to have potential use in the treatment of infectious diseases and chemical oxidation reactions.
