Cobalt(II) perchlorate hexahydrate is a crystalline solid that belongs to the class of inorganic compounds called nitrates. It is an oxidizing agent, which can be used for the production of other cobalt salts. Cobalt(II) perchlorate hexahydrate has been shown to reversibly bind ammonium nitrate and tetranitromethane, which are both explosive materials. The binding constants for these compounds are also known. The coordination chemistry of this compound is well-studied and it has been shown to form two different types of crystal structures: one with octahedral geometry, and the other with tetrahedral geometry. This compound has also been studied using x-ray diffraction methods to elucidate its atomic structure.
