Chromium is an essential trace element and has many beneficial effects on human health. Chromium sulphate tetrahydrate is a salt of chromium that can be used as a redox potential indicator. It is also used in the laboratory to investigate chemical reactions involving chromium, such as the chemiluminescent reaction of potassium dichromate with hydrogen fluoride or hydroxyl group containing compounds, or the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of metabolic disorders. Chromium sulphate tetrahydrate has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of picolinic acid synthesis in vitro and in vivo. This inhibition may be due to its ability to compete with picolinic acid for binding sites on nicotinamidase, which is necessary for picolinic acid production. Chromium sulphate tetrahydrate has also been shown to inhibit sodium citrate degradation, thereby increasing its concentration in the urine.
