8-Carboxyoctanol is a diphenyl ether with an anti-infective agent that belongs to the class of fatty acid derivatives. It has been shown to inhibit the biosynthesis of fatty acids in bacteria. In vitro experiments have shown that 8-carboxyoctanol inhibits protein synthesis and enzymatic activity in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Corynebacterium glutamicum, and S. aureus strains. 8-Carboxyoctanol also inhibits the production of fatty acids by inhibiting the enzyme preparations involved in their formation rate. 8-Carboxyoctanol has been found to be effective against C. glutamicum and S. maltophilia, but not against S. aureus strains or P. maltophilia.
