Descrição:Proguanil hydrochloride is a drug used to treat malaria. It is a prodrug that is activated in the liver by hepatic esterases and converted to chloroguanide. Proguanil hydrochloride binds to DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, which inhibits transcription and replication of bacterial DNA. This drug also has effects on cardiac cells and can worsen congestive heart disease. Proguanil hydrochloride has been shown to interact with other drugs, such as acetaminophen, phenytoin, and warfarin, which can result in serious side effects. Proguanil hydrochloride is not active against some types of bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex.
