3-Chlorosalicylaldehyde is a synthetic chemical that belongs to the group of pharmacological agents. It reacts with amines to form salicylaldehyde and a base, which can be further reacted with another amine molecule to produce an N-substituted salicylamide. 3-Chlorosalicylaldehyde has been shown to have low expression in bacteria, but it has potent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. The structure of 3-chlorosalicylaldehyde is similar to that of heterocyclic amines, which are known carcinogens found in meat cooked at high temperatures. 3-Chlorosalicylaldehyde may also contribute to the formation of DNA adducts and mutations in the DNA of cells, leading to cancerous changes.
