Cletoquine oxalate is an antimalarial drug that belongs to the class of 4-aminoquinolines. It is used in the treatment of malaria and other diseases caused by protozoa. The drug binds to hemozoin, a crystallized form of haemoglobin that is excreted by the parasite into erythrocytes, and inhibits its production. Cletoquine oxalate has been shown to be effective against autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or discoid lupus erythematosus. This drug also monitors levels of cletoquine in blood (plasma) and can be used for monitoring adherence to therapy. Cletoquine oxalate can be quantified using HPLC methods.
