1,3-Cyclohexanedione is a compound that belongs to the class of ester compounds. It is an important intermediate in the synthesis of polymers and plastics. 1,3-Cyclohexanedione has been shown to be a good substrate for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with optimal rates and yield under basic conditions when it is used with hydrogen ions as the source of nucleophilic attack. 1,3-Cyclohexanedione also reacts with hydrochloric acid at low temperatures to form cyclohexanone. This reaction proceeds via a secondary alcohol group p2, which acts as a nucleophile in the nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon of 1,3-cyclohexanedione. In some cases, this reaction can be affected by metal chelates or other additives such as nitro groups.
