Diflubenzuron is a chemical pesticide that is used to control pests such as insects and mites. It is a broad-spectrum insecticide that acts by inhibiting the growth of chitin, which is an important component of the exoskeleton of insects. Diflubenzuron has been shown to be effective against larvae with resistance to other insecticides and has been shown to have no effect on plants. This chemical can be used in agriculture, horticulture, and forestry for the prevention of pest damage. Diflubenzuron binds to the enzyme activity required for chitin synthesis, preventing its synthesis and disrupting cell division. Diflubenzuron inhibits the enzyme activity of chitin synthase in insects without affecting other enzymes such as those found in plants. The high level of specificity for this enzyme has led to it being used as a model system for studying other enzymes.
