It has been used in biological studies to examine the role of alanine in energy metabolism. 3-Chloro-L-alanine is an intermediate in the conversion of L-alanine to pyruvate, which is then converted to acetyl coenzyme A. The racemase enzyme catalyzes this reaction and converts 3-chloro-L-alanine into D-(+)-3-chloro-L-alanine. This reaction has been shown to be synergistic with other enzymes such as 1,4 dioxane hydrochloride, which can increase the rate of reaction by up to two orders of magnitude.
