Cyclopropyl acetylene is a reactive monosodium salt that is synthesized by the reaction of malonic acid with phosphorus pentachloride. This compound has been used in the synthesis of anhydrous sodium malonate, which is a precursor to pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Cyclopropyl acetylene can also be used in the acylation of amides, a reaction that produces fluorescent products. The use of this reagent in cancer research has been shown to inhibit cervical cancer cell growth by competitively inhibiting the binding of growth factors to their receptors on cells.
